On the eve of a new year

Here we are, another year come and gone. Well, not quite, but close enough. In general, I’m not one to dwell on the past. What is done is done, and it can’t be changed. The good with the bad. What I can do though is make sure that the coming year moves in the direction I want it to.

What does that mean for me? Devoting the time I should to writing. Learning more on the guitar. Teaching my children the joy of being creative. My daughter is a voracious reader, and I love it. She loves to write and draw her own books. My son loves music in many forms. Even though she can read, she still asks me to read to her too, which is great.

You know, seize the day. No time wasted on regrets or should have beens or could have dones. Don’t let myself get bogged down in the day to day slog that I miss the great things happening.

I’ve never liked resolutions much either. Everyone sticks with them for a month or two. Rarely does it go past that. Instead I plan to set goals that I can meet daily. Both writing and guitar.

So to you my friends, I hope you have a great 2011. I plan to.

Tis the season…

for being super busy. Writing has continued, though at a slower pace than previous. I want to write, just not sure what. It could very well be a factor of simply applying butt to chair. It’s not even the what. I know -what-. Just not sure how to get it there. Again, butt to chair.

Guitar practice has been quite fun. I think the primary difference between guitar and writing for me is I don’t have as much built up around playing guitar. Just playing it for fun, learn some songs. Need to recapture that around the writing.

We finally saw Scott Pilgrim vs the World. The kids got it for my birth. As you likely have heard, it was awesome! Highly enjoyed the movie. Check it out if you haven’t already.

Really looking forward to Christmas this year. The kids are really going to enjoy it. Will recap after the holiday.

Relevance

Here are a few relevant posts that have struck a chord with me as of late.

First we have Gordon over at We Fly Spitfires, a MMO Blog. He had an interesting post about minimizing things in your life. In particular he was referring to playing multiple MMOs, being up on the latest greatest. For me it is more of cutting out things that aren’t helping you toward your goals. In a perfect world we would all have jobs we loved. But last I checked, no one was living in a Utopia. We have to do what we can to get where we want to be.

Another interesting blog I have been reading is by the author Charlie Stross. Though it isn’t his posts on writing that have been the most interesting for me. Instead, I have really enjoyed his posts revolving around conspiracies.

Post on Wikileaks

Post on the Overweight Virus

Post on buying the British Government

So, hope you enjoy these articles as much as I did.

Back on the wagon

Not that wagon. The writing wagon. Back at it again today. Was good to get back into the groove of things. Wrote today on my lunch. Thank you work. Not much, but on the plus side of things I picked up relatively where I left off without a hitch. Still want to see this story come to fruition. In spite of any flaws in the prose, I still feel it’s a story that needs to be told.

So, to recap, and re-affirm that I am indeed doing something:

  • Day Job
  • Wrote
  • Practiced Guitar (those callouses I  keep hearing about happen eventually, right?)

Now time for a little video game action.

The Anti-NaNoWriMo

As my wife succinctly (and jokingly) pointed out November was the Anti-NaNoWriMo for me. Certainly not as any declaration against NaNoers, I just didn’t write. I took a break and that is OK. Even as I internally wondered if I should ever bother writing again I was plotting stories.

So the break is over and it is time to get back to writing. As we dive into December the busiest month of the year between holidays and birthdays. My wife also picked me up an acoustic guitar for my birthday (dec 12) so I will be carving out some time to learn the instrument. While I may not be spending every waking minute writing, I will be writing something. I’m OK with that too.

(I am really excited to learn the guitar!)

I have some other posts that have been ruminating in the back of my head too. Not directly writing related but certainly underlying themes that drive my stories. Hopefully I can get those up here too.

If you’re still reading, thanks. I hope to have more stuff up soon.
